The Shared FACS Facility at Stanford University is seeking a Cytometry Technical Specialist to join our service center team. The facility is a highly utilized flow cytometry service center that provides consistent, high-quality, state-of-the-art flow cytometric tools and applications to researchers throughout Stanford University and research institutions/companies in the region.
This position has 2 primary components: The first is an emphasis on technical support for flow cytometry and sorting instrumentation. Direct experience in flow cytometry is not required; training will be provided, but a successful applicant will bring high mechanical aptitude, an enthusiasm for understanding the inner workings of scientific instrumentation, and a desire to learn these systems. The second major component of this position is to provide operator support for the flow cytometry and sorting instrumentation. This will include using your expertise in flow cytometry and sorting to teach, assist, and troubleshoot flow cytometry and sorting experiments in collaboration with researchers. Willingness to learn new techniques and troubleshoot technical problems is a requirement.The successful applicant will be trained on the cutting edge of flow cytometry research and will assist users in novel research using multicolor sorting and analysis. As with any busy laboratory environment, excellent personal communication skills and the ability to manage a time and an appointment schedule is a must. Duties include:

  • Perform routine maintenance on facility equipment, including startup and QC of cytometers.
  • Become familiar with all instrumentation used in the facility and provide technical support for repair and instrumnetn troubleshooting as needed.
  • Work with research staff on implementation of updates to FACS facility instruments and computer capabilities.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to work in a BSL-2 environment to meet the needs of the facility.
  • Provide operator support for researchers on running experiments on the instrumentation.
  • Take responsibility for non-routine instrument maintenance and repair (complementing instrument manufacturer service).
  • Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. *- Other duties may also be assigned DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires mechanical/technical aptitude to understand the design and functions of cytometry research instrumentation.
    While desirable, direct experience with flow cytometry is not a requirement with demonstrable experience or technical expertise in scientific instrument repair/engineering, etc.
    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
    • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
    • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
    • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
    • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
    • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
    • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
      Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds. Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts. Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls. Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.Position may require repetitive motion.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
